Steps to getting your truck licence

Is your business on the rise? Is it time to ensure your vehicles are up to the task? You currently hold a C car licence, but what’s the next step? For some, it’s obtaining a Light Rigid Truck Licence (LR). This licence class allows you to drive a light duty truck, which will enable you to carry a bigger load, relative to weight and size.  It isn’t a huge process but there are a few steps involved in ensuring that you have the right information to get you on your way. First step is to know what the main differences are between your Class C Car Licence and the Light Rigid Truck Licence.

Capabilities of a Light Rigid Truck Licence

A Light Rigid Truck Licence allows you to drive trucks above 4.5 tonnes and up to 8 tonnes and buses that carry more than 12 adults. You can also tow a trailer weighing less than 9 tonnes.

Making the move from a car licence

Making the move from a car licence to a truck licence can be a logical next step for professional drivers, business owners, and trade workers. A light duty truck licence will allow you to carry and deliver larger cargo, whether for yourself or an employer. The ability to drive a twelve-passenger van may also help people working in childcare centres or assisted living homes. Your new licence could help you make more sales, deliver more goods, and advance your career.

How is it done?

Certain tests need to be passed before you receive your Light Rigid Truck Licence. A Light Rigid Knowledge Test, an eyesight test, and HVCBA (heavy vehicle competency assessment) completion are all necessary for obtaining your light truck licence. In addition to passing your assessments, you also need to hold a class C licence for at least a year.

Light Rigid Truck Licence can differ from state to state. Check out your state’s requirements:

The Light Rigid Truck Licence gives you the opportunity to drive a variety of vehicles, transport larger cargo, and provides a solid foundation for acquiring further heavy truck licences. Whether you’re seeking a career in driving or want to expand your business, upgrading your licence could be the perfect place to start.
